Two Columbia men, father and son, are behind bars facing federal drug charges after law enforcement intercepted a 72-pound shipment of high-grade marijuana at their residence. Osama Nadir Yanis, 48, and Nader Robert Osama Yanis, 23, were charged in separate but related criminal complaints filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Jefferson City, Mo., marking a significant strike in the Western District’s ongoing crackdown on interstate drug trafficking.
According to the criminal complaints, both Osama and Nader Yanis are charged with possession of 50 kilograms or more of marijuana with intent to distribute. Osama Yanis faces an additional charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime—a charge that could tack on a mandatory minimum sentence if convicted. The charges stem from a coordinated raid executed on February 19, 2018, after investigators monitored suspicious deliveries to the family home.
On that day, law enforcement observed Osama Yanis accepting a crate at his Columbia residence. Surveillance confirmed the delivery contained approximately 72 pounds of high-grade marijuana. Shortly after, Nader Yanis arrived at the home, stayed for 10 to 15 minutes, then left carrying a bag. He was pulled over by Columbia police in his black Cadillac Escalade and found in possession of marijuana and a small quantity of a white substance believed to be cocaine.
A search of the home uncovered more than just the delivered crate. Officers found an additional 33 pounds of marijuana stashed in a bedroom closet and hidden within an HVAC closet. Nearly $19,000 in cash was surrendered by Osama Yanis following his arrest. He admitted ownership of multiple firearms, including a revolver on his desk and weapons locked inside a large gun safe—details that strengthened the firearm charge tied to drug activity.
The investigation was triggered days earlier when authorities were alerted to two suspicious packages addressed to another individual but shipped to Osama Yanis’s address. The first contained about 50 pounds of marijuana; the second, the 72-pound haul seized in the raid. The affidavit suggests a pattern of large-scale distribution, with the residence used as a hub for illicit drug transfers.
The case is being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael S. Oliver. It was jointly investigated by the FBI, the Columbia Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. U.S. Attorney Timothy A. Garrison emphasized that the complaints are accusations only, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a trial by jury.
