COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a stunning turn of events, 24-year-old Siyuan Ye has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for a brazen identity theft scheme that defrauded victims out of over $100,000. The Columbus man pleaded guilty in February 2024 to mail fraud and aggravated identity theft charges.
Between January 2022 and August 2023, Ye is accused of stealing the identities of at least 15 unsuspecting individuals. His cunning method involved obtaining Ohio and Florida driver licenses without authorization, using them to secure fraudulent credit lines from retailers in the victims’ names.
The stolen credit was used to fuel Ye’s lavish lifestyle, including the purchase of a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, three motorcycles, and an array of high-end electronics. One example is April 2023, when he spent $8,400 on graphics cards, laptops, and an Apple watch using a stolen identity at Columbus’ Micro Center.
Ye didn’t stop there; he also exploited another victim’s identity to acquire a Suzuki motorcycle from Iron Pony Motorsports in Westerville. Additionally, he rented an apartment and secured renter’s insurance under yet another victim’s name.
Despite having no legal status in the United States, Ye entered in 2017 on a student visa at The Ohio State University. His plans to complete his degree were thwarted when he unlawfully remained in the country after dropping out.
The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarah D. Morrison also orders Ye to pay over $78,000 in restitution. United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Kenneth L. Parker, and Acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphy of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit announced the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Peter K. Glenn-Applegate is representing the United States in this case.
