A shocking case of child enticement has led to the conviction of a former federal agent. Salvatore Contreras, a 50-year-old former Border Patrol (BP) agent, has admitted to attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson.
Contreras, who was stationed in Del Rio, had been in contact with an undercover agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) whom he believed was the parent of two daughters ages eight and 14. During the conversations, Contreras transmitted numerous images of child pornography.
Believing he would be engaging in sexual activity with both minor children, Contreras travelled from Del Rio to Cotulla. However, upon his arrival in Cotulla on Dec. 2, 2016, he was arrested by law enforcement officials. Following his arrest, he resigned from his position as a Border Patrol agent.
The investigation was conducted by Customs and Border Protection – Office of Inspector General and HSI, with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) – Western District of Texas. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa of the USAO – Southern District of Texas is prosecuting the case.
Contreras now faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in federal prison, as well as a possible $250,000 maximum fine. His sentencing will be set at a later date, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined.
This disturbing case highlights the importance of law enforcement efforts to protect children from predators. The fact that a former federal agent was involved in such heinous activities is a stark reminder that no one is above the law, and that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable.
