ATHENS, GA – In a dramatic turn of events, James Marcus Lloyd, III, 41, of Charleston, South Carolina, has been found guilty by a jury in Athens for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction follows an intense pursuit that had Georgia law enforcement and innocent motorists on edge.
The harrowing chase began on June 24, 2013, when Lloyd was stopped on Interstate 20 for traffic violations. His reaction was to flee at high speeds, reaching 95 mph as he narrowly missed several vehicles in the emergency lane, including dangerous semi-trailer tanker trucks.
After abandoning his car in the median, Lloyd attempted to evade capture on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers. A loaded, semi-automatic 9mm pistol was discovered nearby.
“Lloyd endangered innocent motorists and law enforcement with his reckless flight from justice, and as a felon with a firearm, he posed a threat to our community,” said U.S. Attorney Michael Moore. “The jury’s decision ensures he will be held accountable.”
The investigation was led by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Assistant United States Attorneys Tamara Jarrett and Peter Leary prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
