Convicted Felon Gets 5-Year Prison Sentence for Gun Threats
Bobby A. Commons, a/k/a ‘Blood,’ 44, of Herrin, Illinois, will spend the next five years behind bars for a federal firearm violation, a crime that earned him a 60-month prison sentence.
On November 22, 2017, Commons threatened another person using a stolen rifle and fired three rounds while inside his Herrin residence. The evidence presented in court established that Commons used a firearm in a threatening manner, violating federal law, which prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms.
Commons’ prior felony conviction sealed his fate, making him ineligible to possess guns. The investigation revealed that Commons’ actions put the lives of those around him at risk.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, the Herrin Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The Williamson County States Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
In a plea deal, Commons pleaded guilty to a one-count indictment charging unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The sentencing hearing took place this week with United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Steven D. Weinhoeft announcing the 60-month prison term.
Commons’ 5-year prison sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearm laws. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and federal authorities in keeping communities safe.
In a statement, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Steven D. Weinhoeft emphasized the significance of this case, saying, ‘The safety of our communities depends on the effective enforcement of federal laws, including those regulating firearms.’
