Convicted Felon Locks Up 10 Years for Gun Possession

Columbia, South Carolina – A North Charleston man is heading behind bars for a decade after pleading guilty to a federal weapons charge.

Neko Andre Tisdale, 33, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to United States Attorney Beth Drake.

The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel in Charleston federal court.

The charges against Tisdale stem from a June 12, 2014, traffic stop by City of Charleston Police officers. The officers smelled the odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle and subsequently searched the vehicle, discovering a Bersa Firestorm pistol hidden under a child seat.

Tisdale admitted to owning the firearm, which sparked a new investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the City of Charleston Police.

Just days after being released on bond from the initial arrest, Tisdale was arrested again by City of Charleston Police on January 31, 2015, for an additional firearm charge.

Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi, who prosecuted the case, said the sentence is a reminder that gun crime will not be taken lightly in the Palmetto State. Bianchi can be reached for comment at (843) 727-4381.

Tisdale’s lengthy sentence serves as a stark reminder that guns and crime do not mix in South Carolina. As the Grimy Times continues to investigate gun-related crimes, we remain committed to shedding light on the issue and bringing justice to victims and their families.
