Benjamin Marcel Wright, Possession of Firearm During Drug Trafficki…

A 23-year-old Greenville man has admitted to arming himself while deep in the drug trade. Benjamin Marcel Wright pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Anderson, South Carolina, to possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum of five years behind bars.

Wright was arrested on September 15, 2016, and has been locked up ever since. The case centers on a September 11 encounter in a shuttered city park where Greenville Police, on foot patrol, came across Wright and a woman engaged in suspicious physical activity. A search of Wright turned up a loaded .9mm pistol stashed in his pants. Moments later, officers discovered narcotics connected to a nearby vehicle.

The evidence presented during the change of plea hearing painted a clear picture: Wright wasn’t just armed—he was operating in a space tied to drug distribution. The firearm, prosecutors argued, was no accident. It was a tool of the trade. His guilty plea to a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c), seals that narrative.

U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Cain accepted the plea but withheld sentencing pending a presentence report from the U.S. Probation Office. Though Wright already faces a mandatory five-year minimum, federal guidelines allow for a maximum sentence of life in prison, depending on enhancements and criminal history.

The investigation was a joint operation between the Greenville Police Department and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Max Cauthen of the Greenville U.S. Attorney’s Office, handled the case with the precision typical of high-stakes drug and gun prosecutions.

United States Attorney Beth Drake confirmed the plea, underscoring federal resolve in cracking down on armed drug offenders. For Benjamin Marcel Wright, the road ahead leads deeper into the justice system. The message from federal court is clear: guns and drugs don’t just invite arrest—they guarantee prison time.
