Local Man Convicted of Firearms Violation

Mitchell Thompson, 21, of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 3 years and 2 months in prison for violating federal firearms laws, according to a recent court ruling. Chief United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak imposed the sentence on Thompson.

According to evidence presented in court, on August 30, 2018, law enforcement officials were conducting a saturation patrol detail in Wilkinsburg in response to a recent homicide and several shootings. Upon seeing an unmarked police vehicle, Thompson threw a loaded Glock 9 millimeter pistol onto the sidewalk near a row of bushes. The firearm was later found to be stolen.

Thompson’s previous convictions, including one for a firearms violation and one for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, also played a significant role in the sentencing. Federal law prohibits individuals with such convictions from lawfully possessing firearms or ammunition.

Assistant United States Attorney Christy C. Wiegand prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wilkinsburg Police Department, conducted the investigation that led to Thompson’s conviction.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime. Project Safe Neighborhoods focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to address the root causes of crime.

Project Safe Neighborhoods has proven to be effective in reducing violent crime, making communities safer and reducing the risk of harm to law enforcement and the general public.

Thompson’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. The punishment meted out to him is a testament to the determination of law enforcement agencies to keep communities safe from the scourge of gun violence.
