A convicted felon from Leesburg, Florida, is headed to federal prison after a guilty plea for possession of a firearm.
Tyran Terrell Harris, 24, was sentenced to two years in federal prison by United States District Judge Thomas P. Barber for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a crime that carries significant penalties.
The case against Harris began on September 25, 2023, when officers from the Leesburg Police Department observed him walking around an apartment complex with a loaded firearm. A record check showed the firearm had been reported stolen approximately two weeks earlier.
Harris had multiple prior state felony convictions, including grand theft, tampering with a witness, and grand theft auto. When confronted by the officers, Harris admitted to knowing he couldn’t possess the firearm as a convicted felon.
The investigation into Harris’ activities was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Leesburg Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk prosecuted the case.
Harris’ sentencing is part of a broader effort to reduce violent crime and gun violence in Lake County, Florida, as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. The program brings together law enforcement and community organizations to make neighborhoods safer.
With his guilty plea, Harris has acknowledged the severity of his crime and will now face the consequences. As part of his sentence, he will serve two years in federal prison, a fate that could have been avoided if he had not chosen to possess a firearm as a convicted felon.
