GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — In a chilling turn of events, Hamilton Clark Smith, 59, of Milford, Connecticut, has pleaded guilty to an offense related to threatening a federal law enforcement officer. United States Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery announced the plea before U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford.
Court documents and statements revealed that on January 10 and 11, 2023, Smith engaged in a series of menacing text messages aimed at a Deputy U.S. Marshal, threatening both the officer and his family with harm and even death. On January 11, 2023, Smith took this threat to another level by calling the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center in Virginia, explicitly stating his intent to kill the deputy.
Smith’s spree of terror came to an end on January 12 when he was arrested. He now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two years for making repeated harassing communications, as sentenced by Judge Nagala, who has scheduled sentencing for July 16.
With a $100,000 bond, Smith remains free until his upcoming court date. The Federal Bureau of Investigation spearheaded the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren C. Clark handling the prosecution.
This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by federal law enforcement officers on the front lines, and the consequences for those who would dare to threaten their safety.
