HARTFORD, CT – Hamilton Clark Smith, 59, of Milford, has admitted to a chilling campaign of threats against a Deputy U.S. Marshal, according to a statement released today by U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery. Smith pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala, bringing a small measure of accountability for his disturbing actions.
The threats weren’t idle boasts. Court documents reveal that between January 10 and 11, 2023, Smith bombarded the Deputy U.S. Marshal with a series of menacing text messages. These weren’t just vague expressions of anger; they included explicit threats to harm and even kill the officer, extending the danger to their family. As if that wasn’t enough, Smith escalated the situation further.
On January 11, 2023, Smith didn’t stop at texts. He directly called the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center in Virginia, delivering a chilling statement: he would kill the Deputy U.S. Marshal. This direct threat triggered an immediate response, leading to Smith’s arrest the following day, January 12, 2023.
Smith now faces the consequences for his actions, having pleaded guilty to making repeated harassing communications. This offense carries a maximum sentence of two years in federal prison. Judge Nagala has scheduled sentencing for July 16, where Smith will learn his fate. Whether two years is enough to deter similar behavior remains to be seen.
Currently, Smith is released on a $100,000 bond while awaiting sentencing. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation, demonstrating the seriousness with which federal authorities treat threats against their personnel. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren C. Clark is prosecuting the case, ensuring that Smith is held accountable for his brazen attempt to intimidate and harm a law enforcement officer.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by federal law enforcement and the swift response that will be taken against anyone who attempts to threaten or harm them. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing next month.
