RIVERSIDE, California – Ahmed Binyamin Alasiri, also known as Kevin Lamar James, a 44-year-old Garden Grove resident, was today indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly selling pound quantities of methamphetamine while on supervised release following a 2009 terrorism conviction.
According to court documents, the 96 percent pure methamphetamine sold on July 24 fetched $3,700, while another pound, later shown to be 98 percent pure, sold for the same amount on August 6. Alasiri’s arrest came on August 21 after a criminal complaint accused him of narcotics trafficking.
The defendant is currently serving supervised release after completing a 16-year federal prison sentence for conspiracy to levy war against the United States through terrorism. His co-conspirators were involved in numerous armed robberies to fund planned attacks against U.S. military operations and Israeli and Jewish facilities in Southern California.
Alasiri’s arraignment on the new charges is scheduled for September 14. Each count of distribution of methamphetamine carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The investigation into Alasiri’s activities is being conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, with assistance from various agencies including the Los Angeles Police Department, the United States Probation Office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Dennise D. Willett is prosecuting the case.
