Kansas City Man Sentenced to 9 Years for Illegally Possessing Firearms
A Kansas City man was sentenced to nine years and seven months in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing firearms. Jerrell D. Coppage, 34, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of firearms and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs on March 6, 2025.
Coppage was in possession of a Glock, Model 22, .40 caliber pistol, an Anderson Manufacturing, Model AM-15, .223 caliber pistol, and a Ruger, Model LCP, .380 caliber pistol, on Jan. 3, 2024. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone with a felony conviction to possess any firearm or ammunition.
Coppage has a history of felony convictions, including four prior convictions for burglary, three prior convictions for theft, two prior convictions for stealing a motor vehicle, and prior convictions for sale of a controlled substance, tampering, and forgery. At the time of the federal offense, Coppage was on parole in a state case.
This case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Jennings and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program brings together law enforcement and communities to foster trust and legitimacy, support community-based organizations, set focused enforcement priorities, and measure results.
