Corning Woman Caught in Disability Benefits Scam
Phyllis Stevens, a 51-year-old resident of Corning, New York, has been sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay $17,468 in restitution after being convicted of lying to the Social Security Administration.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Field, who handled the case, Stevens collected disability benefits from the Social Security Administration while she was gainfully employed and ineligible to receive such benefits. The defendant attempted to conceal her employment from the Social Security Administration by submitting a false document stating that she was not working.
Stevens’ actions resulted in her collecting $17,468 in disability benefits that she was not entitled to receive. ‘The sentencing is a culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Edward J. Ryan,’ a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office read.
U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa handed down the sentence, ordering Stevens to serve three years of probation and pay the restitution. The conviction marks the end of a long investigation that began with a tip from an anonymous source.
The case highlights the importance of accountability in the social welfare system. ‘It’s unacceptable for individuals to take advantage of the system and deceive authorities in order to receive benefits they’re not entitled to,’ said U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr.
The sentencing of Phyllis Stevens serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior. ‘We will continue to investigate and prosecute those who attempt to cheat the system,’ Hochul added.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s office commended the Special Agents of the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, for their tireless efforts in bringing the case to justice.
