ALBANY, NEW YORK – Maria Angelica Cruz Lancheros, also known as Coral Marisol Tovar-Flores, 42, a Mexican citizen from Corona, New York, faced the music today with a sentence of 63 months in prison followed by a 3-year period of supervised release for aiding and assisting an illegal alien already convicted of an aggravated felony to enter the United States.
The grim reality was announced by United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Robert N. Garcia, Chief Patrol Agent of the United States Border Patrol, Swanton Sector.
In a heart-stopping saga that began on May 5, 2017, Cruz Lancheros embarked on a treacherous journey from New York City to Fort Covington with Jose Cardona Brito. Their goal was to sneak Jose Idarraga Lozano into the United States from Canada, but fortune wasn’t on their side that day.
The duo tried again the next day, meeting and picking up Idarraga Lozano near the border. However, fate stepped in once more as they were nabbed by Border Patrol Agents on New York State Route 11 near Burke, New York. Idarraga Lozano was a man on the run, having been convicted of drug trafficking in 2007 and removed to Colombia in 2009, making him inadmissible for entry into the United States.
On May 9, 2019, Jose Cardona Brito, 43, from Jackson Heights, New York, a Colombian citizen, was also convicted for his role in the illegal entrance plot. He received time served (24 months) plus an additional year of supervised release. Idarraga Lozano, 34, faced his own music on March 28, 2018, when he was sentenced to 16 months in prison and a year of supervision.
This case was a joint effort between the Border Patrol and Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan, who saw it through to justice.
