Former Correctional Officer Admits to Role in Assaults
Albany, GA – A former correctional officer has pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to assault and injure inmates at Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe, Georgia.
Willie Redden, 24, a former member of the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT), admitted to participating in the assaults in 2010. He stated that correctional officers beat inmates as a form of punishment.
One inmate was severely injured and had to be transported from the prison in an ambulance. Redden also acknowledged that he and other correctional officers attempted to cover up their role in the assaults.
According to the Justice Department, Redden was instructed by more senior officers to write a false report and stick to a cover story when questioned by investigators.
“Mr. Redden admitted today that instead of lawfully carrying out his public safety responsibilities, he conspired with fellow officers to assault inmates and then cover up those assaults,” said Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Thomas E. Perez.
Redden faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. His sentencing date has not yet been set. The case is being investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia with the assistance of the Civil Rights Division.
