But a recent federal takedown of a particularly nasty crew offers a glimpse of how law enforcement is attempting to stem the tide. Correy Cawthorn, a member of the violent Baltimore street gang the “Cruddy Conniving Crutballs,” otherwise known as the “Triple C” gang, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison this week, a key victory in a larger RICO case.
The sentencing of Cawthorn follows a year of intense collaboration between multiple federal, state, and local agencies, a fact highlighted at a press conference Thursday by U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron. Barron, alongside ATF Director Steven Dettelbach, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Richard Worley, and other key law enforcement figures, announced that Baltimore saw a more than 20% reduction in homicides in 2023, and a 9% drop in non-fatal shootings. These numbers, while positive, are cold comfort to the families still reeling from loss.
“Every life saved from senseless acts of gun violence is worth celebrating,” Dettelbach stated, but he quickly added a grim reminder: “But we can’t forget that every single life lost to this epidemic is a needless tragedy.” The ATF, Dettelbach explained, is focusing its efforts on identifying and prosecuting the “trigger pullers” driving the violence, utilizing “crime gun intelligence” to target specific individuals rather than entire communities. He vowed the ATF’s commitment to Baltimore remains strong, promising continued pressure in 2024.
Cawthorn admitted to his role in a racketeering conspiracy, and his participation in at least three violent acts as part of the Triple C gang’s criminal enterprise. The “Cruddy Conniving Crutballs” – a name that speaks volumes about the depravity of Baltimore’s underworld – have long been a source of fear and instability in the city. The 35-year sentence is a significant blow, but dismantling the entire organization will require sustained and coordinated effort.
State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates emphasized the collaborative spirit that fueled the progress. “Together, we have achieved significant strides in reducing violent crime,” Bates said, “and while just one life lost to violence in Baltimore is one too many, we remain optimistic.” He pointed to strategic initiatives, community engagement, and diligent prosecution as key factors in the declining crime rates, but acknowledged the ongoing struggle.
The agencies involved – including the ATF, FBI, DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Marshals, Maryland State Police, and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services – are promising to continue their coordinated approach. While the numbers offer a glimmer of hope, the Grimy Times remains skeptical. Until the root causes of violence are addressed – poverty, lack of opportunity, and systemic inequality – Baltimore will remain a city on the edge.
