Barbra Elise Miller, a Coshocton pharmacist, has been sentenced to more than four years in prison and ordered to pay over $2.1 million in restitution for health care fraud, according to U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.
Miller pleaded guilty earlier this year to five counts of health care fraud and one count of adulteration of drugs after an investigation revealed she fraudulently received over $2 million from state, federal, and private medical insurance companies through fraudulent billing practices.
Dettelbach stated that Miller’s actions not only defrauded victims out of millions but also caused health complications for a child due to her adulteration of the drug Kineret, used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
The case involves Miller’s tenure at Three Rivers Infusion and Pharmacy Specialists, where she executed a scheme to defraud multiple healthcare benefit programs between 2003 and 2009. Miller filed over $1 million in claims for services using false provider names and fraudulent claims regarding nursing time, drug dosage, and frequency.
Ohio Attorney General DeWine emphasized that there are checks and balances in place to ensure those engaging in health care fraud do not escape justice.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Lutzko and attorneys with the Ohio Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Section, investigated by various agencies including the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, Ohio Department of Insurance, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, and FBI.
