A New York man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for purchasing a Yamaha ATV in Enosburg, Vermont with $3,500 in counterfeit U.S. currency.
Francis Hamblin, 31, of Fort Ann, New York, was sentenced by Judge William K. Sessions III in Burlington, Vermont. He was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release.
According to court records, Hamblin responded to an advertisement on Craig’s List to purchase the ATV in October 2013. However, the seller became suspicious of the currency and contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, which confirmed it was counterfeit.
An investigation by the sheriff’s office led to Hamblin’s arrest, and it was revealed that he had purchased two other ATVs with counterfeit currency – one in Albany, Vermont and the other in Plattsburgh, New York.
Two of the three ATVs were recovered and returned to the original owners, while the third was not. Hamblin was also ordered to pay $2,080 to the seller in Plattsburgh, New York.
In addition to the ATV purchases, court records show that Hamblin also passed a $20 counterfeit bill at Burger King in South Burlington, Vermont.
The case was investigated jointly by the United States Secret Service and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The United States is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Perella. The defendant is represented by David McColgin, Esq. of the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Burlington.
