Counterfeit jersey scam rocks the Big Easy as Mohammed Sameer Ahmed, 36, of Kenner, Louisiana, was charged yesterday in a Bill of Information with trafficking in counterfeit goods, announced U.S. Attorney Dana Boente. Ahmed, a local shop owner, was found with 58 counterfeit NFL jerseys in his French Quarter store.
The fake jerseys, bearing the logo of Reebok, had false NFL holograms on them, leading customers to believe they were authentic New Orleans Saints jerseys. This brazen scam has left many in the community outraged, with some calling for stricter regulations on counterfeit goods.
According to the Bill of Information, Ahmed sold these counterfeit jerseys between June and October 2010. If convicted, he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a fine of $2,000,000, and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney Boente emphasized that a Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis.
Local residents are speaking out against the sale of counterfeit goods, with some calling for increased penalties for those caught engaging in such activities. ‘It’s not just about the money,’ said one resident. ‘It’s about the integrity of our community.’
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the sale of counterfeit goods will not be tolerated in New Orleans. Ahmed’s case serves as a warning to others who would seek to profit from such illicit activities.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and the need for stricter regulations on counterfeit goods. As the city moves forward, one thing is certain: the people of New Orleans will not stand idly by while counterfeiters seek to undermine the integrity of their community.
