Counterfeit NFL Jerseys Kingpin Caught in French Quarter
MOHAMMED SAMEER AHMED, 36, a resident of Kenner, has been caught red-handed in a massive counterfeiting operation in the heart of New Orleans. The brazen scheme involved the sale of 58 counterfeit NFL jerseys, specifically fake New Orleans Saints jerseys, from June 2010 to October 2010.
The jerseys, bearing false markings and holograms, were designed to deceive customers into believing they were authentic. But Ahmed’s web of deceit was eventually uncovered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, who worked tirelessly to bring the counterfeiter to justice.
According to court documents, Ahmed’s store in the French Quarter was a hotspot for counterfeiters, selling fake jerseys to unsuspecting customers. The operation was so brazen that Ahmed even went so far as to create fake holograms to make the jerseys appear authentic.
But Ahmed’s luck finally ran out when the authorities caught wind of his operation. He was subsequently charged with trafficking in counterfeit goods and has since pleaded guilty to the crime. Ahmed faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, a fine of $2,000,000, and 3 years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney Dana Boente praised the efforts of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in bringing Ahmed to justice. ‘We will not tolerate counterfeiting in our community,’ Boente said. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to protect consumers and bring those who engage in this crime to justice.’
Sentencing for Ahmed is scheduled for July 17, 2013. In the meantime, the public is advised to be cautious when purchasing jerseys, especially those bearing suspicious markings or holograms.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis. Ahmed’s guilty plea is a significant blow to the counterfeiting community and serves as a warning to others who would engage in this crime.
