Craig Ross, a 29-year-old man from Fort Thompson, South Dakota, was sentenced to 26 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Ron Parsons.
Ross was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing, which took place on February 19, 2019, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on July 29, 2018, when Ross, having previously been convicted of a felony, was apprehended by law enforcement in possession of a firearm. Law enforcement had heard gun shots and located Ross and another individual with a rifle.
Ross was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 11, 2018. He pled guilty on November 27, 2018.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case.
Ross will serve 26 months in federal prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. This case is a clear example of the consequences of violating firearms laws as a convicted felon.
The public is reminded that law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to keep our communities safe and to hold accountable those who break the law.
