Felix Cruz, Illegal Gun Possession, Pennsylvania 2023

Western Pennsylvania’s grim reality of gun violence took a dark turn when Felix Cruz, 49, formerly from Houston, Pa., was sentenced for illegal gun possession. Cruz, caught with firearms after being convicted of a crime that carried more than one year in prison, now faces up to 10 years behind bars, a fine of $250,000, or both.

U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton, ATF Acting Asst. Special Agent in Charge Marcus Watson, and local law enforcement officials emphasized the relentless pursuit of individuals like Cruz who flout firearms laws. “It’s time to shed light on those who lie to obtain firearms for criminals,” Hickton stated. The ATF Philadelphia Field Division’s Acting Special Agent in Charge Donald Robinson added, “ATF will investigate and arrest anyone who purchases, transfers, or possesses a firearm in violation of the law.”

Under federal law, individuals with certain convictions or statuses, such as felons or fugitives from justice, are prohibited from owning firearms. Cruz’s case serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions faced by those who defy these laws.

Seven individuals, including Cruz, were announced at a recent news conference to face federal charges related to illegal gun possession and related offenses. The relentless efforts of law enforcement in Western Pennsylvania continue to crack down on gun violence and its associated crimes.

In addition to Cruz’s case, Linda Daugherty, 32, Jeffrey Cochenour, 41, Ronald DeGrange, 46, and Charles Warner, 26, were also indicted for providing false information to federal firearms licensees or being in possession of firearms while prohibited from doing so. Warner faced the most severe charges, including a fugitive status and pending felony drug and firearms charges.

These cases underscore the commitment of law enforcement to maximize efforts in preventing gun violence and prosecuting those who seek to arm themselves with illegal firearms.
