Jonathan Spalletta, a Maryland man, has been charged with hacking a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange in New York, making off with over $50 million in a series of clever and devastating cyber attacks. The hacks, which occurred in April 2021, targeted Uranium Finance, a crypto exchange that allowed users to deposit and exchange different kinds of cryptocurrencies via liquidity pools. Spalletta, who went by the aliases Cthulhon and Jspalletta, allegedly used his hacking skills to exploit vulnerabilities in the exchange’s smart contracts, stealing millions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency in the process.
The indictment, which was unsealed in the Southern District of New York, alleges that Spalletta committed two separate hacks of Uranium Finance, with the first occurring on April 8, 2021. The hacks were described as a deceptive series of transactions that allowed Spalletta to steal cryptocurrency from the exchange. Spalletta has been charged with computer fraud and money laundering in connection with the hacks, and faces significant prison time if convicted.
The investigation into Spalletta’s activities was led by the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division, with assistance from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The case is a significant one, as it highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in the cryptocurrency space and the need for exchanges and users to be vigilant in protecting themselves against these types of attacks.
Spalletta’s arrest and charging are a major victory for law enforcement, who have been working to crack down on cybercrime in the cryptocurrency space. The case is also a reminder that cryptocurrency is not a lawless frontier, and that those who engage in illegal activities in the space will be held accountable. As US Attorney Jay Clayton noted, ‘Stealing from a crypto exchange is stealing—the claim that ‘crypto is different’ does not change that.’
