A Daly City resident and former rideshare driver has been charged with a federal hate crime for an antisemitic attack on a passenger at San Francisco International Airport.
Csaba John Csukás, 39, allegedly struck the victim in the face on October 26, 2023, because he perceived the rider to be Jewish or Israeli.
The attack occurred when Csukás was hired to drive the victim from SFO to their home. According to the indictment, Csukás asked the victim if they were Jewish or Israeli, stated that he would not transport a Jewish or Israeli person, and then attacked the victim.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland condemned the attack, saying that ‘no one in this country should live in fear because of how they worship or where they come from.’
FBI Director Christopher Wray added that ‘no one should ever fear being attacked because of their nationality or religion.’
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California’s Special Prosecutions Section.
Csukás faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 if convicted.
