Curtis Alan Perry, a Colorado man, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for tax evasion in Wyoming.

Perry, who ran an ammunition-manufacturing-and-sales business in Laramie, Wyoming, under the Ammo Kan brand, was found guilty of 12 counts of failure to account for and pay trust fund taxes.

Between 2013 and 2016, Perry withheld federal taxes from his employees’ paychecks but failed to pay those taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. Instead, he used the unpaid employment taxes to support himself and his business.

Perry was sentenced on May 23, 2022, and was ordered to pay $356,280.37 in restitution and a $1,200 special assessment. The court also handed down 3 years of supervised release following his prison term.

“Employment tax evasion results in the loss of tax revenue to the U.S. government and the loss of future Social Security and Medicare benefits for those employees,” said United States Attorney Bob Murray.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation’s Denver Field Office and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, with United States Attorney Eric J. Heimann prosecuting the case at sentencing.

Curtis Alan Perry is a resident of Windsor, Colorado, and operated his business in Laramie, Wyoming. He was sentenced on 12 counts of failure to account for and pay trust fund taxes, with a total tax loss of approximately $356,280 to the United States government.

The court’s decision sends a clear message to others who may believe they are above the law, according to Andy Tsui, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation Denver Field Office.

Curtis Alan Perry, Case No. 20-cr-00126-NDF, was found guilty of crimes against the federal government and attempted to obstruct the IRS’s investigation.

Perry’s crimes resulted in the loss of future Social Security and Medicare benefits for his employees, as well as the loss of tax revenue to the U.S. government.
