CLEVELAND, OH – A tragic series of events unfolded in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on June 1, 2023, as at least 5 individuals lost their lives to suspected overdose in a mere 12-hour-period. The harrowing news was confirmed by Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson, who issued a public health alert warning of the dangers of illicit drug use.
Dr. Gilson warned, "Drug overdose continues to be a problem in our community with periodic clusters of deaths like yesterday." He emphasized the importance of individuals taking precautions, such as avoiding illicit drugs or using a harm reduction plan if they are unable to stop using. He also highlighted the availability of treatment options for long-term sobriety.
According to the medical examiner’s office, the deceased individuals were: a 38-year-old male from Broadview Heights, a 32-year-old female from Cleveland, a 63-year-old male from Cleveland, a 52-year-old male from Cleveland, and a 70-year-old female from Parma.
The circumstances surrounding these tragic events are a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of illicit drug use. As our community grapples with this issue, it is essential that we focus on providing support and resources to those affected.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has outlined a harm reduction plan to help mitigate the risks associated with opioid addiction. This plan includes having Naloxone and fentanyl test strips ready, not using drugs alone, sitting upright, and calling 911 (Good Samaritan) in case of an emergency.
For those struggling with addiction, Dr. Gilson encourages seeking treatment. "As with most chronic diseases, addiction is treatable," he said. While treatment may vary depending on an individual’s needs, recovery is possible.
