Council Bluffs, IA – In a shocking turn of events, Dalton Theodore Holland, 30, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced to 51 months in prison for Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm. The sentence was handed down on May 10, 2022, and will be followed by three years of supervised release.
According to court documents, Holland pleaded guilty to the firearm charge on November 18, 2021. His co-defendant, Joshua Michael Holmes, 26, also pleaded guilty to Prohibited Person on Possession of a Firearm on April 15, 2021, and was sentenced on August 31, 2021 to 63 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
The incident took place in November of 2020, when officers observed Holland and Holmes arrive at a home in Council Bluffs driving stolen vehicles. As officers attempted to approach the pair, they attempted to flee in one of the stolen trucks but it got stuck. Officers boxed the truck in and apprehended Holmes. Holland ran from the bed of the truck and was stopped a short distance away by a police dog. Holland and Holmes were found in possession of stolen items and firearms. Officers located a firearm on Holmes in a hip holster and another in his coveralls pocket. Two firearms were also located in the stolen Silverado that Holland drove to the home.
The investigation into the case was led by the Council Bluffs Police Department, Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Offices for the Southern District of Iowa. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal made the announcement regarding the sentence.
Holland and Holmes were both found to be prohibited persons in possession of firearms, which is a serious offense. The sentence handed down to Holland serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions.
In related news, the Council Bluffs Police Department has increased its efforts to crack down on stolen vehicle crimes. Residents are advised to take extra precautions to secure their vehicles and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
