Dana Green, Felon with Firearm, Fort Wayne IN, 2023

FORT WAYNE, IN – Dana Green, 38, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being caught with a handgun despite a lengthy rap sheet that already disqualifies him from owning one. U.S. District Court Judge Holly A. Brady handed down the 180-month sentence yesterday, followed by four years of supervised release. The case underscores the ATF’s continued crackdown on illegal firearms possession, particularly by repeat offenders.

The bust went down in March of 2022 when Fort Wayne Police responded to a disturbance call. Officers found Green in possession of a handgun. A quick check of his record revealed a history of felony convictions – three of them, to be exact – instantly making firearm possession illegal. Prosecutors successfully argued that these prior convictions qualified Green as an “armed career criminal,” justifying the harsh sentence.

“This isn’t a first offense,” a source within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) told Grimy Times. “Green had multiple chances, multiple convictions. He made a choice to arm himself illegally, and now he’s paying the price. We’re taking these cases seriously, especially when dealing with individuals who have already demonstrated a disregard for the law.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey R. Speith handled the prosecution, building a solid case based on the evidence gathered by the ATF and the Fort Wayne Police Department. The quick response and thorough investigation were critical in securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana, led by Clifford D. Johnson, has made firearm offenses a priority.

The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategically prioritizing enforcement.

While the sentence offers some measure of relief to Fort Wayne residents, it also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against gun violence. The ATF’s Chicago Field Division remains committed to dismantling criminal networks and keeping illegal weapons off the streets. Green’s case is just one example of the relentless effort to make neighborhoods safer, one arrest – and one conviction – at a time.
