POMPANO BEACH, FL – A Pompano Beach man, 36-year-old Rodney Leroy Brown, will spend the next 27 years of his life behind bars after a federal jury convicted him of a terrifying armed robbery that put a store clerk and a five-year-old child in mortal danger. U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore handed down the 324-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, on January 11th.
The crime unfolded on March 18, 2023, at approximately 8:30 a.m. inside a Pompano Beach convenience store. Brown, already a convicted felon with a rap sheet including burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and grand theft, casually selected a soda before circling around the counter to confront the clerk and his young son. He didn’t ask for money; he demanded it, brandishing two firearms at both victims and threatening to kill them if they didn’t comply.
The terrified clerk, fearing for his life and the safety of his child, handed over the cash from the registers. Brown wasn’t satisfied with that. He then snatched the clerk’s purse before making a hasty escape. The entire ordeal was a calculated act of violence, fueled by a disregard for human life and a clear pattern of criminal behavior.
“This sentence sends a clear message: those who prey on innocent citizens and endanger children will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” stated Markenzy Lapointe, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Miami Field Division, with crucial assistance from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), built a solid case against Brown, proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson of the ATF’s Miami Field Division emphasized the agency’s commitment to tackling violent crime. “We will continue to work tirelessly with our partners to remove dangerous individuals like Mr. Brown from our communities,” he said. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ajay J. Alexander and Catherine Koontz were the driving forces behind the prosecution, successfully securing the lengthy sentence.
Brown’s extensive criminal history undoubtedly played a significant role in the severity of the sentence. His prior convictions demonstrate a pattern of escalating lawlessness, culminating in this brazen act of violence. The 27-year sentence provides a measure of justice for the victims and hopefully deters others from following a similar path of criminality. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those working in the service industry and the unwavering commitment of federal agencies to protect the public.
