A 26-year-old Venezuelan national, Robinson Abrahan Esparragoza Regalado, was caught with a loaded 9mm pistol during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Florida on November 25, 2025. As an illegal alien, Esparragoza Regalado was prohibited from possessing any firearm or ammunition. He pleaded guilty to the crime in federal court and now faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and deportation after serving his sentence.
The case was a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Florida Highway Patrol. Assistant United States Attorney Adam Hapner is prosecuting the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat illegal immigration and transnational crime.
United States Attorney John P. Heekin stated that the successful prosecution delivers on the goal of removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens from communities. Sentencing is scheduled for June 16, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in Gainesville, Florida before Chief District Court Judge Allen C. Winsor.
The firearm found in Esparragoza Regalado’s possession was a 9mm pistol equipped with a 33-round extended magazine, which was almost fully loaded with ammunition. This case highlights the importance of enforcing firearms laws and combating illegal immigration.
