TAMPA, FL – Donald Robert Smith, 29, of Tampa, has confessed to a string of brazen armed robberies that terrorized local businesses and a hardworking citizen this summer. Smith pleaded guilty this week to three counts of Hobbs Act robbery, and faces a substantial prison sentence for his violent actions.
According to court documents, Smith’s crime spree began on August 1, 2022, with a robbery at an unnamed Tampa business. He brandished a firearm, menacing employees as he demanded cash. Just two days later, Smith struck again, this time pointing a gun at a cashier during another Tampa robbery. The pattern was clear: Smith wasn’t just after money, he was willing to use force and intimidation to get it.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) quickly zeroed in on Smith as the prime suspect. A search of his vehicle yielded a Taurus 9mm handgun – a weapon that would soon be linked to a third, even more disturbing incident. On August 1, 2022, Smith confronted a man returning to his work truck. He demanded the victim’s wallet, and as he walked away, fired the handgun. Fortunately, no one was injured by the discharge, but the act underscores the reckless disregard for human life exhibited by Smith.
“This individual posed a significant threat to the Tampa community,” said a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity. “He wasn’t content with simply stealing money; he escalated his crimes by brandishing and discharging a firearm. That crosses a line, and we’re glad he’s facing justice.” The shell casing recovered from the scene of the shooting definitively linked the Taurus 9mm to the crime, cementing the case against Smith.
Smith now faces up to 20 years behind bars for the robbery offenses. However, the firearm charges carry significantly harsher penalties: a minimum mandatory sentence of seven years, up to life, for brandishing, and a minimum of 10 years, up to life, for discharging the weapon. These latter sentences will run consecutively, meaning Smith could spend decades in federal prison. He’s also agreed to forfeit the firearm and ammunition used in the robberies.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Samantha Newman, with forfeiture handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney James Muench. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida highlighted this case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. But for the residents of Tampa, the promise of PSN rings hollow until Smith – and others like him – are safely locked away.
