Richard James Bassett, Jr., Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Florida 2021

Richard James Bassett, Jr., 47, of Fort Myers, is headed to federal prison for 18 years after being caught with a loaded firearm he wasn’t allowed to touch—thanks to a long criminal record and a fateful search warrant executed on November 14, 2019.

U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber handed down the sentence after Bassett pleaded guilty on July 16, 2021, to being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating the conditions of his supervised release from a prior federal drug conviction. The charges stem from a raid on an apartment where Bassett was seen walking in with a black and grey speckled backpack moments before law enforcement kicked in the door.

Inside, officers found cocaine and other narcotics scattered in the kitchen. But the real danger was in the backpack—where a loaded firearm was recovered. Forensic analysis later confirmed the weapon had been handled by Bassett, sealing his fate under federal law, which bars convicted felons from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Bassett isn’t a first-time offender. His criminal history marks him as an armed career criminal, making his illegal possession of the gun a far more serious federal offense. The conviction carries enhanced penalties, and prosecutors didn’t let up—Assistant United States Attorney Trent Reichling pushed for maximum accountability.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fort Myers Police Department, underscoring the city’s escalating efforts to target repeat violent offenders. This case was prosecuted under the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a data-driven strategy aimed squarely at dismantling violent crime networks.

PSN brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to focus on the most dangerous offenders. By combining aggressive enforcement with community prevention and reentry programs, the program has proven effective in reducing gun violence. But for Richard James Bassett, Jr., there’s no reentry just yet—just 18 years behind bars.
