Daniel Barrera Barrera, Cocaine Trafficking, New York 2013

Colombian narcotics kingpin Daniel Barrera Barrera, also known as ‘Loco Barrera,’ was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in conspiring to distribute and manufacture cocaine, knowing it would be imported into the United States.

On July 9, 2013, Barrera was extradited from Colombia to the Southern District of New York, where he was charged with one count of conspiring to launder money, as well as one count of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States and one count of conspiring to manufacture and distribute cocaine, knowing it would be unlawfully imported into the United States.

Barrera’s sentencing comes after decades of manufacturing hundreds of tons of cocaine annually in Colombia and trafficking it to various parts of the world, including the United States, and laundering tens of millions of dollars in proceeds from that narcotics trafficking activity.

According to court documents, Barrera partnered with powerful cartels and terrorist organizations, including the designated terrorist group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), to purchase raw cocaine base or paste and transport it to the United States.

Barrera’s crime spree was finally brought to an end in 2010, when he was designated as a ‘Special Designated Narcotics Trafficker’ by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.
