A shocking case of mail theft has come to light in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Daniel Hindes, a 35-year-old rural carrier associate, pleaded guilty to theft of mail by a postal employee on an unspecified date in 2020 in federal court.
According to court records, Hindes worked out of the Bar Harbor Post Office and stole cash and gift cards from mail addressed to customers on his route between November 2019 and March 2020.
Hindes would open the mail and take the cash and gift cards, then discard the opened mail into the garbage rather than delivering the items.
When interviewed by federal investigators, Hindes admitted to opening 20 to 30 letters and taking cash and gift cards inside them.
Hindes faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine for his crimes.
He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
