Topeka Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery, Escape

A Topeka man is behind bars for a daring bank robbery and a brazen escape from federal custody. Daniel Lee Dukewits, 40, of Topeka, was sentenced to 9 years and 2 months in federal prison for the crimes.

Dukewits pleaded guilty to one count of escape from custody and one count of bank robbery in federal court. The sentence was handed down by U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

In 2010, Dukewits was sentenced to 125 months in federal prison for armed robbery. However, he was living at the Mirror Inc. residential re-entry center in Topeka in 2017 when he turned up missing. His GPS tracking device was found in a trash can in his room.

Dukewits went on to rob the Azura Credit Union at 3623 SE 29th Street in Topeka on November 15, 2017. He demanded money from the bank employees and was arrested within minutes of the robbery after a pursuit during which he rammed a police car.

McAllister commended the Topeka Police, the U.S. Marshals Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard for their work on the case.

The sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. Dukewits’ crimes put innocent lives at risk and caused chaos in the community.

The case serves as a warning to those who would consider committing similar crimes. The authorities will not hesitate to pursue justice and bring perpetrators to account.
