Richmond Man Indicted in Social Security Fraud Scheme

INDIANAPOLIS – A Richmond, Indiana man has been charged with Social Security Fraud. Daniel M. Glunt, 56, was indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of Social Security Fraud, accused of defrauding the treasury of over $55,000.

Glunt, who applied for Supplemental Social Security (SSI) benefits in 2008, claimed he had no sources of earned or unearned income. However, investigators for the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General discovered that Glunt was employed by a trucking company in Cincinnati, Ohio, and had been employed for the majority of the time he was collecting SSI.

Glunt received SSI benefits continuously from April 2009, until August 2015. SSI is a federal-funded program designed to administer cash assistance to the aged, blind or disabled who have little or no resources to live. To qualify, an applicant must certify that they are unable to engage in substantial gainful work as a result of physical or mental impairment that is terminal or expected to last at least 12 months.

“Social Security benefits are reserved for those who cannot provide for themselves and need legitimate help from the government,” said U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler. “Those who choose to take advantage of this and other supplemental income sources will be held strictly accountable.”

Glunt could face up to five years in prison if convicted. An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in federal court.

U.S. Attorney Minkler stated that Social Security benefits are a lifeline for many disabled Americans and that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring the integrity of the Social Security Administration’s programs.

Glunt is currently facing one count of Social Security Fraud. An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in federal court.
