Daniel Michael Twohearts, Firearms Charges, North Dakota 2018

Fargo, North Dakota – In a shocking turn of events, 24-year-old Daniel Michael Twohearts was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a string of firearms charges in North Dakota.

On January 23, 2018, Twohearts was sentenced before Circuit Court Judge Ralph R. Erickson for Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Trafficking Crime.

The case began on February 2, 2017, when a North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper attempted to pull Twohearts over for a traffic offense on Interstate 29 near Grand Forks, North Dakota. However, Twohearts refused to stop and led police on a high-speed chase, eventually crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot.

During the pursuit, Twohearts fired a handgun at the trooper and a Hillsboro police officer, but neither were injured. A multi-agency manhunt ensued, and Twohearts was eventually located in Devils Lake, North Dakota, after stealing three different vehicles along the way.

When confronted by law enforcement, Twohearts engaged in a brief standoff, during which he shot himself in the chest with the same handgun he had fired earlier. He was subsequently apprehended and arrested without further incident.

Twohearts was sentenced as an Armed Career Criminal, with eight prior burglary convictions, and was on state probation at the time of the instant offense. He had previously pled guilty in state court on charges relating to stealing motor vehicles and endangering an infant in the course of fleeing from law enforcement.

In addition to his 25-year prison sentence, Twohearts was also ordered to pay $400 in special assessments and $482.99 in restitution. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and several other law enforcement agencies.
