Daniel Moss, Methamphetamine and Firearm Charges, Iowa 2021

A Fort Dodge man is facing serious charges after a hit and run accident led to the discovery of his involvement in methamphetamine trafficking and illegal firearm possession. Daniel Moss, 45, was convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and illegal possession of a firearm after pleading guilty in federal court in Sioux City on April 19, 2021.

Moss was previously convicted of another drug felony offense in 2009 for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, distribution of methamphetamine within a protected location, and employment or use of a person under 18 to assist in conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

According to court documents, Moss conspired to distribute more than 50 grams of pure methamphetamine from June 2020 through July 5, 2020, in the Fort Dodge area. On that day, he was involved in a hit and run accident and fled the scene, leading to a police chase. During the pursuit, Moss assaulted a police officer, and a loaded stolen handgun fell from his waistband.

After being caught, a search of his vehicle and a black Nike sports duffel bag he discarded revealed a drug ledger, paperwork with his name, syringes, baggies with residue, a scale, a cell phone, $14,500, and 2 grams of methamphetamine. Another bag found in his vehicle contained 54 grams of pure methamphetamine, a scale, and a pipe used for ingesting controlled substances.

Moss’s prior felony conviction and drug use prohibited him from possessing a gun. He now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a $20,000,000 fine, and at least 10 years of supervised release following any imprisonment for the conspiracy conviction. For the firearm conviction, Moss faces a maximum sentence of not more than 10 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of not more than $250,000, and a term of supervised release of not more than 3 years.

Moss remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a violent crime reduction initiative, and Project Guardian, a program aimed at reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearms laws.
