Trever Carl Christopherson, Gun Possession by a Drug User, Iowa 2021

Trever Carl Christopherson, a 32-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a gun as a drug user.

According to court documents, Christopherson was involved in a traffic incident on January 1, 2020, during which he and another driver reported each other to the police. While investigating the incident, officers recovered a gun from Christopherson’s car. At the time, Christopherson admitted to being a methamphetamine user.

Christopherson’s troubles didn’t end there. He was later convicted of felony theft and extortion in separate incidents. During a separate investigation, Christopherson was found in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

The case against Christopherson was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. The program focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

Christopherson is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the North Liberty Police Department.

Christopherson’s case highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of violent crime, including substance abuse. As part of his sentence, Christopherson will have the opportunity to receive treatment and support to address his addiction.
