Cruz Vargas, Jr., Meth Trafficking, Texas 2022

A shocking crime has rocked the Rio Grande region as Cruz Vargas, Jr., 42, an Illinois resident, has been sentenced for importing meth into the United States. On July 24, 2022, Vargas attempted to enter the country from Mexico through the Rio Grande Port of Entry with large containers loaded in his vehicle. This seemingly innocent act would soon unravel to reveal a dark and sinister plot.

Law enforcement officials referred Vargas for a secondary inspection after he falsely claimed the containers held vitamins. A narcotics detection K-9 unit promptly alerted the authorities, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle. It was then that the containers were tested, confirming the presence of over 50 kilograms of meth.

On March 4, 2023, Vargas pleaded guilty to the charges. As a result, he was ordered to serve 120 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. This serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such illicit activities.

The investigation into Vargas’ activities was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cahal P. McColgan prosecuted the case.

Cruz Vargas, Jr. will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, which will be determined in the near future.
