Daniel R. Guthrie, 55, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, is facing federal charges for stealing from the very union workers who trusted him to lead. The president of United Steelworkers Local Union 10-0583 has been indicted on one count of embezzling and theft of labor union assets, accused of siphoning $8,189.51 for personal use.
Federal prosecutors allege Guthrie used the union’s credit card to make unauthorized personal charges. On top of that, he allegedly set up electronic bill payments from the union’s bank account to cover his own private expenses. The transactions, detailed in the indictment, paint a picture of a union official treating worker funds like a personal piggy bank.
The crime came to light through an investigation by the Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards. Agents uncovered the misuse of funds during a routine audit of union financial records. The probe led to a federal grand jury in Erie, Pennsylvania, which returned the indictment earlier this week.
Guthrie now faces serious consequences. The law allows for up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the final penalty will hinge on the severity of the offense and whether Guthrie has any prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini is handling the prosecution. Acting U.S. Attorney Soo C. Song confirmed the charges, emphasizing that misuse of union funds undermines worker protections and violates federal trust. “Union assets exist to serve workers, not personal interests,” Song said in a statement.
An indictment is not a conviction. Daniel R. Guthrie is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case moves forward as federal authorities continue building their evidence for trial.
