Daniel Santos, a 26-year-old man from Dade City, has been sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison for his role in a bank fraud and aggravated identity theft scheme.
According to court documents, Santos pleaded guilty on August 24, 2021, to the charges, which stem from a scheme that victimized at least 55 individuals and 21 financial institutions between May 2016 and June 2018.
The scheme involved Santos depositing fraudulent or altered checks into bank accounts and then withdrawing cash from the accounts before the banks discovered the checks were fraudulent. Bank video surveillance captured Santos committing these crimes, and an investigation by the Tampa Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation uncovered the full extent of his scheme.
Through the scheme, Santos deposited $570,977.38 in fraudulent checks and received $263,066.15 in fraud proceeds. As part of his sentence, the court also ordered restitution in the amount of $263,066.15, which represents the proceeds of the bank fraud.
Santos’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell, who considered his extensive criminal history when determining the length of his sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys John Cannizzaro and Mandy Riedel.
The sentence is a significant one, and it reflects the seriousness with which law enforcement and the courts take bank fraud and identity theft. These crimes can have a devastating impact on victims, and it is important that those who commit them are held accountable.
In this case, Santos’s actions were particularly egregious, as he targeted numerous individuals and financial institutions over the course of several years. His actions were brazen and calculating, and they demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and for the well-being of others.
As Santos begins his sentence, it is a reminder that bank fraud and identity theft are serious crimes that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The investigation and prosecution of these crimes require the cooperation of law enforcement agencies and the courts, and it is through this cooperation that justice can be served.
