FARGO – A 19-year-old Fargo man has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison and five years supervised release for conspiracy to tamper with a federal witness.
Daniel Saydee Cisse was sentenced by Chief District Judge Peter Welte on January 18, 2024, for his role in assaulting a federal witness in the Cass County jail on January 14, 2023.
Cisse pleaded guilty on September 25, 2023, to his involvement in the assault, which was planned and arranged by co-conspirators with the intent to influence, delay or prevent the witness from testifying in an official proceeding.
The witness was a key figure in an ongoing investigation into the drug-related homicide of Santino Marial, who was shot to death in Fargo on August 28, 2020. Marial’s murder remains a priority for law enforcement, and the attempted intimidation of the witness is a serious offense.
The case was investigated by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Fargo Police Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher C. Myers and Jacob T. Rodenbiker.
Two co-defendants, Jesse James Burnett and Shaquiel Anthony Mendez, are set to go to trial on July 16, 2024. The outcome of the trial will depend on the strength of the evidence presented by the prosecution and the defense.
The attempted tampering with a federal witness is a serious crime that undermines the justice system and puts innocent lives at risk. The sentence handed down to Cisse is a testament to the severity of this offense and the commitment of law enforcement to bringing perpetrators to justice.
