A Schenectady man has admitted to manufacturing and distributing the powerful hallucinogen N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and manufacturing firearms in violation of federal law. Daniel Scotsross, age 30, of Schenectady, New York, pled guilty to attempted possession with intent to distribute over 10 kilograms of DMT and making firearms in violation of the National Firearms Act.
According to authorities, Scotsross accepted a package containing what he believed to be over 10 kilograms of DMT, a hallucinogen similar to LSD, at his Schenectady residence. However, upon executing a search warrant, law enforcement found quantities of liquid DMT, indicating that Scotsross intended to distribute the substance to others.
In addition to the DMT charges, Scotsross also admitted to possessing two firearms, specifically a combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting firearms into machine guns. He also possessed a 3-D printer and instructions for manufacturing firearms using the printer.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the United States Postal Inspection Service, Customs and Border Protection, the Schenectady Police Department, Albany County Sheriff’s Department, and the New York State Police Crime Scene Emergency Response Team.
Scotsross faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 3 years when he is sentenced before United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby on June 8, 2023.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashlyn Miranda. The charges against Scotsross stem from a package he accepted at his residence, which contained what he believed to be over 10 kilograms of DMT, a powerful hallucinogen similar to LSD.
The investigation and subsequent charges against Scotsross serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by individuals and groups manufacturing and distributing illicit substances, as well as manufacturing firearms in violation of federal law.
As the case moves forward, it will be interesting to see how the court rules on the severity of the penalties and whether Scotsross will receive the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
