Two Des Moines Men Sentenced to Federal Prison for Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl
DES MOINES, Iowa – In a devastating blow to the opioid epidemic, two Des Moines men were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy that led to at least one confirmed overdose death.
Ajang Malou Wour, 43, and Omar Mohamed Nurani, 22, were both sentenced on July 11, 2025 for their involvement in the distribution of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of overdose deaths across the United States.
According to court documents, Wour began trafficking fentanyl pills in the summer of 2023, shortly after his release from federal supervised release. By September 2024, he had graduated to trafficking fentanyl powder, amassing over 60,000 fentanyl pills and 40 ounces of fentanyl powder over an 18-month period.
Nurani, who received frequent shipments of fentanyl pills from Wour, sold the pills to other distributors and customers, including one victim who overdosed and died after using the pills in June 2024. Despite this tragic event, Wour and Nurani continued to sell fentanyl pills and powder, with Nurani distributing an additional 2,000 fentanyl pills and eight ounces of fentanyl powder.
Wour was sentenced to 144 months in prison, followed by a five-year term of supervised release. Nurani received a 120-month prison sentence, with a four-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal announced the sentencing, which was the result of an investigation by the Des Moines Police Department, assisted by the Ankeny Police Department and the Mid-Iowa Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Fentanyl has become the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States, with counterfeit pills often resembling pharmaceuticals but containing potentially lethal doses of fentanyl.
