Convicted felon Daniel Straw, 33, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a 57-month prison term after a high-speed chase in July 2022. Straw was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his previous felony conviction and other circumstances.
Straw pleaded guilty in November 2022 to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. During his guilty plea, he admitted to possessing a Glock 9mm pistol, which he abandoned during a police chase.
According to court documents, Straw took the Cedar Rapids Police Department on a wild goose chase in his vehicle, driving recklessly and eventually abandoning his car after going over a curb. He then scaled a fence and ran through residential backyards, evading capture until he was apprehended in the backyard of a residential neighborhood.
During the search of Straw’s bag, officers found a loaded Glock 9mm pistol, an extended magazine, and marijuana. This incident highlights the dangers of reckless behavior and the importance of community safety initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhoods.
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and communities to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. The strategy focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Straw’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Liz Dupuich and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, composed of representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
