CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – In a shocking turn of events, a felon has been caught red-handed with a firearm in Iowa. Jamie Swanson, a 32-year-old man from Colona, Illinois, pled guilty yesterday in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Swanson was convicted of a felony in the past and was found in possession of a pistol in March 2022. The plea hearing was a pivotal moment in the case, as Swanson admitted to the crime without contesting the charges. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Anamosa Police Department, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Swanson is currently being held in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The maximum sentence he faces is 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The case is a stark reminder of the importance of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that aims to reduce violent crime by targeting the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
PSN is an evidence-based program that has been proven to be effective in reducing violent crime. The program brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. In this case, PSN played a crucial role in bringing Swanson to justice and ensuring that he faces the consequences of his actions.
