Lavell Andre Barnes, Jr., a 27-year-old man from Iowa City, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison.
Barnes was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon on December 19, 2022, in federal court in Cedar Rapids. At his plea hearing, Barnes admitted to possessing the firearm despite being a convicted felon with two felony convictions in Cook County, Illinois.
The convictions, which occurred before his move to Iowa, included a controlled substance offense involving heroin and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Barnes’ possession of the firearm was in direct violation of federal law.
Barnes remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing, which will be set after a presentence report is prepared. He faces a possible maximum sentence of not more than 10 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of not more than $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the nation.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jason Dorval Norwood and investigated by the Iowa City Police Department’s Street Crimes Action Team.
