Hudson County Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for His Role in $3.5 Million Burglary Spree
In a brazen crime spree that spanned six states, a North Bergen man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in a series of at least 27 burglaries and attempted burglaries. Daniel ‘Tokyo’ Gatson, 44, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to transport stolen property in interstate commerce and 11 substantive counts of interstate transportation of stolen property.
According to court documents, Gatson and his cousin, Anthony ‘T.J.’ Hanks, 36, of Brooklyn, New York, used a sophisticated method to target affluent residential neighborhoods. They would conduct surveillance of the target residences, looking for indications that no one was home, before cutting wires and breaking in with masks and gloves. The duo would then steal millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry and cash.
The investigation, led by the FBI and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, uncovered a web of deceit and thievery that spanned the country. Gatson was apprehended on October 11, 2013, while attempting to flush stolen jewelry down a hotel toilet.
Judge William J. Martini, of the U.S. District Court in Newark, imposed the sentence, citing the severity of the crime. In addition to the 25-year prison term, Gatson was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of crime on individuals and communities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher, and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Acting Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal, with the investigation leading to today’s sentencing.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Josh Hafetz of the Organized Crime/Gangs Unit in Newark and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas S. Kearney of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Defense counsel for Gatson was Michael Pedicini Esq. of Chatham, New Jersey.
